The Weight of Words and the Limits of Perspective

A reflection on the impact of gratitude, empathy, and understanding that everyone experiences problems differently.

Tonight, I received a message from one of my former teachers.
Earlier this morning, I told her how grateful I was that she became our teacher back in high school. I told her that she was kind, passionate, understanding, and one of the best teachers I have ever had. More importantly, I told her that she became one of my inspirations.
I didn't say those things to flatter her.
I wasn't sugarcoating words.
I was simply sharing my honest perspective.
Tonight, she sent me a message thanking me again. She told me she was touched by what I said.
That made me reflect on something.
Sometimes we underestimate the impact of our words.
A few sincere sentences can stay with someone for an entire day.
Sometimes even longer.
Whether people are emotional in a positive way or a negative way, words affect them. Actions affect them. We all carry things that other people cannot see, and sometimes a simple compliment, a simple acknowledgment, or a simple expression of gratitude can mean more than we realize.
It reminded me that if we genuinely appreciate someone, maybe we shouldn't wait too long to tell them.
Later during dinner, I had another interesting conversation with friends.
We ended up talking about one of our former classmates and the struggles she was facing during college.
As I listened to the story, I caught myself thinking:
"That problem sounds simple."
From my perspective, the solution felt obvious.
The situation didn't seem that complicated.
But then I realized something.
It's only simple because I'm looking at it through my own experiences.
For her, it isn't simple.
For her, it's difficult.
For her, it's emotionally exhausting.
And that's where life becomes complicated.
Not because problems are always complicated.
But because people experience them differently.
What feels easy for one person may feel overwhelming for another.
What feels logical to one person may feel emotionally difficult for someone else.
And that's something I sometimes forget.
One thing I've learned is that empathy doesn't mean agreeing with everything people do.
It means understanding why they see things the way they do.
Sometimes people need comfort.
Sometimes they need perspective.
Sometimes they need encouragement.
And sometimes they need someone who can help them see a problem from a different angle.
But if we truly care about people, we shouldn't just leave them stuck in the same place forever.
We should help them grow.
Not by forcing them.
Not by looking down on them.
But by helping them discover better ways of thinking, handling emotions, and solving problems.
Because the goal isn't just to make people feel better today.
The goal is to help them become stronger tomorrow.
But if they continue repeating patterns that hinder their growth, it might be helpful to gently encourage them to seek support from a psychologist.
Tonight reminded me of two things.
First, words matter more than we think.
And second, people carry different battles, even when those battles seem simple from the outside.
Maybe that's why empathy is important.
Not because everyone is right.
But because everyone is seeing life from a different place.
And sometimes, before offering solutions, we need to understand where they're standing first.
