The Stories Behind Strong People
Hearing the difficult pasts of friends reveals their desire to protect the next generation from the same suffering.
Today I found myself reflecting on the stories of my friends and teammates from the Tubungan Hymn Music Video project.
As we spent more time together and shared stories, I realized that many of them went through difficult experiences that you would never immediately notice.
Looking at them today, they seem strong.
Calm.
Kind.
Capable.
But hearing pieces of their past made me wonder who they were during those difficult days.
How did they handle those struggles?
How much pain did they carry?
How many nights did they spend worrying, crying, doubting themselves, or trying to survive situations that felt impossible at the time?
The interesting thing is that most of them don't talk about those experiences with bitterness.
Instead, they talk about them as lessons.
As things that shaped them.
As challenges they survived.
And now that they have grown stronger, wiser, and more mature, one thing became very clear to me.
They don't want the same bad experiences to happen to their children.
That struck me deeply.
Many of them cannot erase the hardships they went through.
They cannot rewrite their past.
But they can influence the future.
They can become better parents.
Better mentors.
Better role models.
They can give the next generation a kinder environment than the one they had.
Of course, life will never be free from suffering.
Their children will still face challenges.
Different challenges.
Different struggles.
Different forms of pain.
But what impressed me was their desire to reduce unnecessary suffering.
To guide instead of neglect.
To teach instead of punish.
To understand instead of judge.
Listening to their stories reminded me of something important.
The people we admire today were not always strong.
Many of them became strong because life forced them to become strong.
The kindness they show today may have been born from pain.
The patience they show today may have been learned through hardship.
The wisdom they share today may have come from mistakes they never want others to repeat.
And honestly, hearing their stories hurts.
Not because I experienced those things myself.
But because imagining someone going through those experiences is already painful enough.
It makes me think about my own future.
Especially the future family I may have one day.
If hearing their stories already hurts me, how much more would it hurt if my own children experienced the same things?
That realization gives me another reason to choose kindness.
Another reason to be patient.
Another reason to become a better person.
Because maybe one of the greatest responsibilities we have is not passing our wounds to the next generation.
Instead, we heal from them.
Learn from them.
And create something better.
Listening to these people reminded me that strength is not just surviving difficult experiences.
Sometimes true strength is making sure the people who come after you don't have to suffer the same way you did.
