Chased by a 62-Year-Old Man
Joining a 5k run unprepared and learning a valuable lesson about consistency and aging.
Well technically, I'm writing this on July 3.
But the story happened on July 1, 2026.
I joined our municipality's fun run organized by the MDRRMO and the local government.
I didn't join because I wanted medals.
I didn't join for certificates.
I didn't join to win.
I joined because I wanted to move.
I wanted to challenge myself again.
Because if you don't know, Elly has not been exercising regularly.
My current lifestyle is basically:
Sit.
Work on startup ideas.
Lie down.
Sit again.
Repeat.
My body has slowly evolved into a creature perfectly designed for chairs and computer screens.

I signed up for the 5-kilometer category despite not training for it at all.
Brilliant strategy.
Before the event even started, I walked from home to the town plaza and tried jogging a little to test myself.
The result?
After around one or two minutes of jogging, I was already exhausted.
That should have been my warning sign.
I ignored it.
The race started.
Excitement carried me for a while.
Then reality arrived.
Less than one kilometer in, I was already dying.
The body that spent months sitting in front of computers finally submitted its official complaint.
After that first kilometer, I mostly walked.
And honestly?
I accepted it.
The goal wasn't winning anyway.
The goal was movement.
And movement happened.
Then something interesting happened.
Behind me was an old man.
A friend of my father's.
We started talking while moving along the route.
Then I learned his age.
Sixty-two.
Sixty-two years old.
And somehow this man moved better than I did.
Not fast.
Not aggressively.
Just steady.
Consistent.
Comfortable.
Meanwhile, I was out there negotiating with my lungs.
I asked him about his routine.
Warm water every morning.
Daily walks.
Pure coffee after breakfast.
Small jogs.
Simple habits.
Nothing extreme.
No secret supplements.
No complicated fitness program.
Just consistency.
And honestly, I was impressed.
Not because he was running.
But because he moved like someone decades younger.
Seeing older people move with energy always inspires me.
Because it reminds me that aging and becoming weak are not always the same thing.
Some people become old.
Others simply become older.
There is a difference.
During the run, I caught myself thinking:
"I just need to become rich first so I can stop sitting in front of my computer and finally start moving."
Then immediately I realized how stupid that sounded.
Why do I need money to walk for ten minutes?
Why do I need financial freedom to move my legs?
The truth is much simpler.
I'm just lazy.
Or maybe undisciplined.
Probably both.
My lower back already complains about the way I treat my body.
And honestly, if I continue this lifestyle, future Elly is going to hate present Elly.
So maybe it's time to change that.
Not tomorrow.
Not after becoming rich.
Not after the startup succeeds.
Now.
Even if it's just ten minutes of walking.
Even if it's just moving a little more every day.
Because after meeting that 62-year-old man, I realized something.
The goal isn't simply to become old.
The goal is to become old and still move like life hasn't defeated your body yet.
If I reach sixty-two someday, I hope I can still walk, jog, and move around like he does.
Because honestly?
Watching old people move like young people will never stop inspiring me.
