Generational Mindset Differences: From Financial Stability to Purpose Driven Life

How Things Keep Evolving

Experiences across different eras of humanity vary widely. Each generation has its own unique trends in games, technology, idols, and discoveries. What inspired me to write this article is the noticeable shift in mindset over time.
In the past, people primarily focused on living, surviving, and achieving financial stability. Today, there is a greater emphasis on living with purpose. This shift in mindset is significant. The definition of success has evolved; being financially stable is now distinct from leading a purpose-driven life.
Today's generation is technologically savvy but often perceived as softer and lacking social skills. This critique frequently comes from older generations. Influenced by the pandemic, our generation relies heavily on social media platforms like TikTok for social interaction. We are often supported by families who prioritize financial stability, shaping our approach to life.
Gen Z values freedom and mental health, a shift driven by the growing freedom of expression. Many millennials openly share their mental health struggles, raising awareness across all age groups. Conversations about work or school often highlight the importance of mental health. However, due to a lack of social interaction, some in my generation are hesitant to take risks, unlike daring Red Bull athletes. Having mentors from older generations could encourage us to be bolder. Nowadays, kids are often seen as gadget addicts, avoiding physical work.
For those who come from backgrounds of scarcity, the focus is on excelling in school and securing high-paying jobs. People who prioritize making an impact and fulfilling their purpose often come from environments where financial security is not a daily concern. In contrast, those raised in scarcity prioritize high income, as survival is paramount and purpose is a luxury. When you are in survival mode, contemplating your life's purpose is not an option.
Regarding enjoying life and freedom, older generations worked hard for future enjoyment, while today's generations prioritize living in the moment. The rationale is that enjoying life now is better because old age might limit the ability to enjoy the fruits of hard work. Our bodies have limitations, so it's best to enjoy life to the fullest, balancing work and pleasure.
Gen Z cares deeply about how others perceive them, often sharing their lives online. However, older generations believe that true success cannot be achieved by simply following trends. Many in our generation equate growing social media numbers with success, but this is not the metric of true success according to previous generations. Doing the same thing as everyone else can cause you to get lost in the crowd, making it difficult to stand out and achieve genuine success. Finding common values between generations can lead to harmony and a better future setup.
Values create common ground for different generations. Life is a cycle; our generation will compare its experiences to the next. When we grow old, we might say the same things about the younger generation. It's just a matter of time.
