The Lady Guard's Changing Taste for Meat
A Morning Conversation About Diet and Health
Yesterday, I went to school early and visited one of the organizations I'm a member of. As the lady guard opened the office, I entered, and she asked me to turn on the lights and the electric fan. Instead, I started reading on my Kindle. After a while, she came in, turned on the lights and the fan, and found it strange that I was just sitting there in the dark. We had a conversation about various things, but what stuck with me was when she shared that she no longer finds it interesting to eat at karinderias outside the school. She mentioned that the common dishes are often oily, heavy on meat, and sometimes too salty, which has led her to prefer bringing her own food or cooking at home. She also confessed that she loves sweets but has grown tired of them, though she still gets tempted sometimes.
I suggested she try eating more vegetables and consider going vegetarian. I even advised her to avoid sweet foods, as they aren't really good for us, and to opt for fruits instead. She jokingly asked, "Are you a nutritionist?" and I smiled "No, Im just a vegetarian". The conversation then continued with me sharing the benefits of my diet.
This encounter made me realize that many older people are starting to feel fed up with oily, meaty foods. I guess at their age, after a lifetime of enjoying these foods, they begin to lose their appeal, especially as health issues arise. They seem to express this change in taste, though often it’s a reflection of their lifestyle catching up with them.
It's funny how my interactions with older people have deepened my appreciation for my meatless diet. Even though my reasons are primarily ethical, I also want to show that a meatless diet can be delicious and worth the change.
