The Ultimate Remote Desktop Solution: Exploring Alternatives to Google Chrome Remote Desktop
A journey to find a superior remote desktop application for seamless computer access
9 PM - Changing Remote Desktop Application
Tonight, RustDeck caught my eye as a newly found remote controller for my Mac Studio. Recently, I was wondering why Google's Chrome Remote Desktop wasn't working. I didn't really mind, assuming it might be internet connection issue preventing remote access to my Mac. However, tonight, I was eager to resolve it and couldn't find the app in the launchpad section. I searched the internet and tried downloading it directly from the website, but I was redirected to the Apple Store where I was surprised to find it's no longer compatible with macOS. I had used it just last month.
I searched desperately for an alternative remote viewer or controller. Most of the recommended applications required payment, which I hadn't utilized before due to the cost. After an hour, I changed my search query to find an open-source remote desktop viewer and came across RustDeck. I quickly scanned the site and checked the pricing—it has freemium features that seem sufficient. I installed it and voilà! It looks easy to configure. I adjusted the settings, which seem better than Google's version. I'm very happy; it was worth the search.
I tried changing settings to match my previous setup—enabled background operation and login at startup for seamless remote access even after restarting. Really cool! RustDeck, written mainly in Rust and available on all platforms, offers easy configuration and a beautiful UI with lots of customizable settings even in the free version. The biggest wow factor is its higher quality mirror of the computer—better than Google Remote Desktop, which is impressive for a nonprofit initiative.
Indeed, its founder in Singapore, frustrated with the high prices of other companies, created an incredible application. Thank you, sir.
Now I can connect to my Mac wherever I am.
