Inspiring Insights from Multi-Awarded Ilonggo Director

Today I attended a film talk featuring from UP Visayas, a multi-awarded director who made history as the first Ilonggo to win the FAMAS Best Short Film award. The session was initiated by ISATech Society.

The director shared his journey in filmmaking, with a primary focus on documentaries—particularly historical documentaries. He emphasized that to create a successful film, you must make something that excites you and reflects your sincere beliefs. "What is personal to you is universal," he said, adding that while we may be different physically, we feel the same emotions. "If I’m angry, you get angry."

During the Q&A session, I asked him how long it took to film the final scene, which was shot in one take-no cut. He mentioned that it took two hours and that some unexpected scenarios occurred during the filming process. I also asked how he conceptualizes a film from idea to screen. He explained that he focuses on laying out scenes clearly, since film is a visual medium. "You don’t need to explicitly tell obvious things that can be shown through action," he said. Dialogue is added afterward. He also shared that drinking liquor with his team during discussions enhances their creativity, and before shooting, they hold thesis-like defense sessions where all questions and ideas are validated.

The director revealed that his projects are funded by the Philippine Film Society and other organizations, and he often submits film proposals to secure funding. His passion for filmmaking is evident, and I could see the complexity and structure of his work. He emphasized the importance of creating films that you genuinely want to share with the world.

He mentioned that he has many upcoming films and will also be directing under VivaMax this May. Additionally, his new full-length film is set to be released in the coming months.
